Our story
Bite Aid, and our Community Shark Bite Kits initiative, is a community-funded project that started on the Mid-North Coast of NSW, with the goal of putting essential and critical resources on the beach — resources that could save a life in the event of a shark attack.
How it started
It was an idea that came about after yet another one of our close mates was attacked.
He was extremely fortunate that day. The one and only person to be on the beach — who arrived just as our mate hit the sand missing his right leg — was a retired police officer walking his dog, trained in controlling life-threatening bleeds. With his dog lead, he managed to save our mate's life.
It should never have come down to who happened to be walking past.
The ultimate goal of this project is to make sure that surviving a shark attack is never again left up to chance
What that takes
We need beaches around Australia to be prepared and equipped with the resources that mean anyone, regardless of their training, can be the difference in saving a person's life.
If you're like us, the ocean is part of your daily life. It's part of who we are. We aren't going to stop doing what we love, so the best thing we can do is be better prepared — especially at our isolated beaches.
Put it this way: it's the same as installing defibrillators in public spaces in case someone goes into cardiac arrest, or angel rings on headlands for rock fishers, or wearing a seat belt when you drive. We never know when these accidents are going to happen, but we can definitely be well prepared for when they do.
